April 30 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. newspaper circulation fell 2.1 percent in the six months through March as the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post lost readers, the Newspaper Association of America said. Magazines: A woman's own story

There are an awful lot of women's magazines out there. Sometimes it seems like there can't be another inch of space left on newsagents' shelves for the weight of publications full of tales of mums who ran off with their daughters' boyfriends, sex-op secrets of the stars and miracle one-day diets - yet new ones keep on coming. Forty-seven per cent of the total magazine market in the UK is taken up...

Newspapers nationwide struggle to adapt

The newspaper is not an endangered species, but sometimes it seems that way. The industry's overall profit margins are still in double digits. Newspapers have loyal readers and deep ties to communities, and their Web sites are getting more viewers every year. But many key segments of the business are spiraling down, with little relief in sight. Circulation declines are so bad that a newspaper with...

Web-Only magazines: Real business or face saver?

When Time Inc. killed off Teen People last July but decided to continue publishing it online, the move made sense to some observers, given teen media usage habits. Nearly a year later, though, the site’s audience size has dwindled to 218,000 uniques, according to comScore Media Metrics, and by the end of this month, TeenPeople.com will be absorbed by People.com. Other magazines, however, continue...

Last month, Thomas Weisel Partners analyst Christa Sober Quarles dropped coverage of newspaper stocks. John Morton has stopped writing his industry...

Redesign starts, ends with readers

Carlos Sanchez and his newsroom at the Waco (Texas) Tribune-Herald faced an interesting challenge: how to sell the paper in three seconds or less. That was how Publisher Dan Savage's call to push single-copy sales evolved, said Sanchez, editor of the 39,000-circulation daily. Savage originally challenged the staff to pretend a row of newsboxes stood across the street from the newspaper office. How...

Fertile ground for magazines

Final print copies of InfoWorld, a 29-year-old weekly computer magazine, were shipped to subscribers last week. Death was attributed to plummeting print revenues and declining readership. "There's no guarantee anymore that when InfoWorld landed on a desk, it would be read," explained Bob Ostrow, InfoWorld's chief executive. At the same time, the magazine's online version is thriving. Killing off...

Print starts fading out; most major Indian publications losing readers

Now, here’s the bad news — the Indian print media too has begun seeing a decline in readership as has been happening in many Western countries. Most of the top-rung newspapers and magazines have lost out on readers, according to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2007 Round 1. 'Dainik Jagran' continues to be number one among all publications in the country despite a 6 per cent drop in readership...
