Guwahati: Veteran journalist and the former Editor of The Assam Tribune, Satis Chandra Kakoti, died at his residence here on Monday night. He was 94 and is survived by two sons and four daughters.
Mr. Kakoti began his career in 1937 and served as the Guwahati Correspondent of Hindustan Standard, Ananda Bazar Patrika and the Press Trust of India.
He joined The Assam Tribune as Assistant Editor in November 1931 and took over as the Editor in July 1963. He also edited the Asom Bani and retired in 1976.
He was the founder president of the Assam Sangbadik Sanstha and a member of the State Planning Board and an active member of the Editors' Guild of India. He also served as vice-president of the Guild.
Mr. Kakoti has written a number of books and was awarded the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1976 for his book in Assamese.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi led the State in mourning the death of Mr. Kakoti.
Mr. Gogoi went to his residence to pay floral tributes. His mortal remains were consigned to the flames at Nabagraha crematorium here on Tuesday afternoon.
