Los Angeles Times to close plant, cut 110 jobs

The Los Angeles Times will close its San Fernando Valley plant and consolidate production at other facilities, eliminating 110 jobs, the newspaper said.

The cuts will be made from "across the newspaper's production facilities," the Times said in a statement Monday. Most will be through a voluntary separation program, the newspaper said. The Times is owned by Tribune Co., the Chicago-based media company.

The move follows an announcement last month that the paper was cutting about 85 newsroom positions, or approximately 8 percent of its editorial staff.

In an e-mail to staff at the time, Editor Dean Baquet blamed the newsroom cuts on rising newsprint costs and declining revenue.

The newspaper said it will close its Chatsworth plant and by early next year will have completed the consolidation of its publishing to 11 presses in three other Southern California plants.

"The three more modern plants are fully capable of handling the current and future needs of Times readers and advertisers," Mark H. Kurtich, Times senior vice president for operations, said in a statement.
