A radio reporter died on Saturday, three weeks after he was shot by a gunman in the eastern Philippines, a provincial police chief said, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). Miguel Belen, 48, died two days after his third operation at a hospital in Iriga City, 350 kilometres south-east of Manila, Senior Superintendent Jonathan Ablang said.
"He died before dawn," he said. "His body could no longer endure it." Belen, a reporter for a local radio station, was attacked on July 9 in the nearby town of Nabua. He suffered seven gunshot wounds in his neck and body.
Ablang said police had filed charges against the suspected driver of the getaway motorcycle used by the gunman.
On July 3, gunmen shot dead Jose Daguio, 75, a retired radio commentator, inside his house in Tabuk Cty in the northern province of Kalinga.
Investigators said the killers were suspected cattle rustlers who thought the victim informed authorities about their activities.
More than 100 journalists were killed during the past nine years.
