Pay-out for Murdoch family

Rupert Murdoch's six children are getting an early Christmas present after the family trust Mr Murdoch controls sold more than $360m worth of News Corp shares.

The cash pay-out follows a $600m bonanza received by the siblings in February - at the time the biggest distribution of Mr Murdoch's fortune.

Proceeds from the sale of 17.5m class A shares are expected to be equally split among the children. Some could go to Mr Murdoch himself. "The sale was part of the Murdoch family's normal financial planning," a News Corp spokesman said.

Lachlan Murdoch, Mr Murdoch's eldest son, is on the News Corp board. Mr Murdoch has three other adult children - Prudence, James and Elisabeth - and two young daughters, Chloe and Grace, by his wife Wendi.

James, the younger son and chief executive of British Sky Broadcasting, is regarded as the frontrunner to take over from his father.
