Aizawl, Oct 4 (PTI) Mizos have to cope without newspapers for some days as an acute shortage of newsprint is hitting print media houses in Mizoram.
Vanglaini, the most circulated vernacular daily in the state, could not be published today as there were no newsprint, said its editor K Sapdanga, who is also the president of the Mizoram Journalists Association.
Another popular daily, The Aizawl Post and its sister publication The Evening Post announced they had no choice but to close down as their paper stock would run out in a day or two.
Many newspapers, including three English papers were also facing newsprint supply crunch caused by repeated road blockades on the National Highway No 54, the only lifeline linking Mizoram with the rest of the country.
Newspapers which were being published were thinner and had become costlier.
Newspaper owners said that Guwahati, from where other states of the northeast lifted their paper supplies was also running short of newsprint due to floods and perpetual road and rail communication snaps.
Mizoram, with a population of nine lakh, is the second- most literate state in the country and has over 40 newspapers.
