Nepal: Forty-nine journalists sacked by government-owned media group

(FNJ/IFEX) - Forty-nine journalists working for the past 11 years for Gorkhapatra Corporation, a government-owned media group, were sacked by management without any genuine evaluation of their work on 26 July 2007.

Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) President Bishnu Nisthuri said that management dismissed the journalists on the basis of its political interests. The management of the government-owned media house has also promoted some employees who were active against the democratic movement of April 2006, Nisthuri said.

FNJ has condemned the decision of the Gorkhapatra Corporation and demanded that the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Nepal government assume moral responsibility for taking away the bread and butter of journalists and immediately reinstate them.
