Cairo group publishes book on religion, free expression

An institute in Egypt has published a book on issues of free speech and religion, in response to the controversy over Danish cartoons that depicted the Prophet Mohammed.

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) announced the publication of "Religion and Freedom of Expression: Freedom-Related Problems in Different Societies." The book aims to encourage dialogue between Egyptian and Danish journalists after the “Danish caricature crisis." It also looks at freedom of expression in Egypt and the role of the country's courts, as well as the European Court for Human Rights.

The book includes contributions from academics, human rights activists, poets, journalists, writers and judges. It is the outcome of a six-month program on freedom of expression across cultures initiated by CIHRS in cooperation with several other human rights and media groups.

The book is available in Arabic. An English summary is available at http://www.cihrs.org/top_details_en.aspx.
