Journalist found dead nearly two weeks after being kidnapped

BAGHDAD, Iraq: An Iraqi journalist who was kidnapped last month was found dead nearly two weeks after his abduction, a Paris-based media advocacy group said in a statement released Thursday.

Reporters Without Borders "condemned the murder of Iraqi freelance journalist" Abdul-Majid Ismail Khalil who was kidnapped on Oct. 18 in Baghdad's eastern Jamila neighborhood.

Khalil, who worked for several Iraqi daily newspapers, was abducted by gunmen who surrounded his car, the group said. His body was found 13 days later, it added.

The group did not say where Khalil's body was found but urged police to carry out "a proper investigation."

On Sunday, Iraqi state television presenter, Sherin Hamid, and her driver were found dead in central Baghdad, a day after they were abducted by gunmen.

With Khalil's death, at least 87 journalists have been killed in Iraq since hostilities began on March 2003, according to an Associated Press count based on statistics kept by New York's Committee to Protect Journalists.

With security in the country worsening, 2006 has been the deadliest year yet, with at least 27 journalists killed to date.
