Fellowships include Asian study tour on population issues

Experienced Asian and Pacific journalists can apply for a fellowship program focusing on population issues in the region. The program includes visits to Hawaii, India, Japan and Thailand. Application deadline: June 21.

The Jefferson Fellowships, organized by the East-West Center in Honolulu, are open to both Asian and U.S. journalists. Print and broadcast journalists with at least five years of experience are eligible.

The next program is scheduled for October 15 to November 12, and discussions and visits will focus on population and social dynamics in Asia and the Pacific. Relevant issues include population growth in India, and the growing number of women and young people looking for jobs.

The program is based in Honolulu, where the participants deliver presentations and discuss relevant issues with their colleagues. Then the study tour includes visits to Tokyo and Hiroshima, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; and New Delhi and Mumbai, India. The Freeman Foundation is sponsoring the fellowships, which cover travel, lodging, per diem and other expenses.
