Volgograd to have new city paper after cartoon scandal

Volgograd, February 27, Interfax - The first issue of a newspaper, which is to replace the closed Gorodskiye Vesti, will be released in Volgograd on Tuesday. Gorodskiye Vesti was closed for publishing a religious cartoon.

The lower Volga department of the federal service monitoring media compliance with the law and protecting cultural heritage registered the new paper, Volgogradskaya Gazeta, on February 22, Volgograd Vice-Mayor Konstantin Kalachyov told Interfax.

"The personnel of the closed Gorodskiye Vesti is preparing for the release of the first issue on Tuesday," he said.

Volgogradskaya Gazeta editor Tatiana Kaminskaya, who was the editor in chief of the Gorodskiye Vesti, told Interfax that the new paper would cover city life and publish interviews.

"Despite the scandalous material that caused the newspaper closure, city authorities did not and will not censor the activity of the staff," she said.

In mid-February, Gorodskiye Vesti supplemented an article entitled "Racists don't Belong in Authority" with a cartoon of Christ, Moses, Buddha and Muhammad. The newspaper's registration certificate was invalidated in conformity with a statement by the founder, Volgogradinform, and the newspaper rules.
