MSPs have ordered a report into the state of Scotland's media following a swathe of job losses at the end of last year.
Scottish Parliament researchers will look across television, newspaper and radio activity in Scotland over the next few weeks.
Their report, expected in February or March, could then trigger a series of fresh hearings with media owners called to give evidence.
Last month it emerged that 60 staff at Scottish Television and Grampian TV are facing redundancy following a reorganisation announced by SMG Television. Trinity Mirror also announced plans to cut 43 jobs at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail in Glasgow. It also announced 29 posts were going at the Scottish Daily Mirror, although that number has subsequently been reduced.
Alec Neil, SNP MSP, convener of the Scottish Parliament's enterprise and culture committee, said: "The job of our committee isn't to get involved operationally in how media companies work.
"We want to take a strategic view of what is happening, although obviously the job situation will form part of that."
Last year, MSPs questioned BBC Scotland over its plans to shed 190 jobs and introduce new local news services.
Unions and management at BBC Scotland's Glasgow headquarters are continuing to talk about how the cuts can be made using voluntary redundancy or retraining.
