The safety of the Deputy Editor of Awareness Times Newspaper, Theophilus S. Gbenda, currently hangs in the balance following death threats issued against him by acting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Khrushchev Kargbo of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
t all happened on Friday December 30, 2005 when Theophilus and myself were strolling along Siaka Stevens Street.
Approaching the Law Court vicinity, we spotted a colleague journalist in the person of Pasco Temple, who eventually stopped his car apparently wanting to have a talk with me.
Theophilus and myself rushed towards the vehicle with the sole intention to say hello to a senior colleague.
Reaching the vehicle however, we were surprised to spot next to Pasco yet another friend in the person of acting ASP Khrushchev Kargbo.
It was while we were exchanging greetings that I infact observed that Kargbo was in an angry mood at the sight of Theophilus.
I was surprised when I heard Kargbo bitterly complaining Theophilus to Pasco and myself saying that Theophilus is a negative journalist who some time ago wrote series of unsubstantiated articles about him.
Kargbo went to the extent of describing the articles in question as tantamount to rubbish and aimed only to destroy his hard earned reputation as the most performing ASP in the SLP.
He used all sorts of unkind words on Theophilus which consequently resulted in a heated row between the two.
Kargbo who was in a clearly desperate mood, threatened to mob Theophilus and order his arrest if he does not show respect for his rank as a senior police officer.
As if that was not enough, Kargbo went on in the presence of onlookers, to remark that Theophilus had made himself an enemy of his and that he will do everything humanely possible to kill him either by poison or traditionally.

While all this was unfolding, Pasco Temple who was expected to cool down the situation, backed the visibly drunk officer, and even threatened to beat up Theophilus.
The matter has since been reported at the Complaint Discipline and Internal Investigation Department (CDIID) at police Headquarters.
