NNN Can Help Drive Lesotho's Economy

UALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Lesotho hopes that the setting up of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) News Network (NNN), endorsed at the Sixth Conference of Ministers of Information of Non-Aligned Countries (Cominac VI) which concluded here Tuesday, can help boost its economy.

"I hope through NNN, NAM countries will share their experiences and expertise in information communication technology (ICT) with Lesotho so that we can improve our economy," said its Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Motsoahae Thomas Thabane.

He said although the ICT gap in Lesotho was large, it was aiming to change its economy to an ICT based economy through education.

"Internet access in Lesotho is very limited but it has improved," he said.

He said this year 12 percent of its two million population had access to the internet compared with only seven percent in 2004.

Thabane said the country was also looking forward to collaborating with other NAM countries especially Malaysia to provide training to its journalists and run the NNN in Lesotho.

He said the government will provide the facilities in the rural areas and use the post office as a one-stop centre for the internet.

"We want to teach the population on the internet and the NNN can help to make this possible," he said.
