Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography

The fall deadline for the Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography is November 15, 2005. Getty awards five $20,000 grants annually to photojournalists selected by a panel of judges. Applicants must submit a 500-word proposal explaining a chosen journalistic project along with a portfolio of previous work.

Judges for the current contest include Giovanna Calvenzi, director of photography at Sportweek, the weekly magazine of La Gazzetta dello Sport; Susan Smith, deputy director of photography and illustrations at National Geographic and photojournalist David Burnett.

Winners receive the grant as well as support from Getty editors, and they may elect to have Getty Images market their photos for license for one year.

Overview of Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography

Getty Images believes in the power of photojournalism to bring attention to significant social and cultural issues.

We also know the rigors of executing world class photography assignments, and understand that in order to produce their best work, photojournalists need time, freedom and support.

Beginning in 2005, Getty Images will enable five photographers each year to bring projects of personal and journalistic importance to reality, and to the marketplace, through a new program, Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography. Five grants of $20,000 each, totaling $100,000, will be awarded to five photojournalists annually.

Grant recipients will be selected by a panel of independent judges in two separate rounds of judging each year.

Creative Freedom

More than a monetary grant, Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography will provide photographers with the creative freedom and collaborative editorial support necessary to produce documentary features that raise the bar of visual excellence. Through story development, field logistics and editorial dialogue, Getty Images features' photo editors will work closely with grant recipients throughout project execution.

Global Audience

In addition, the resulting documentary features will be distributed to the global marketplace at www.gettyimages.com, providing grant recipients with additional exposure and revenue opportunities, while retaining their image copyrights.
