Women journalists to improve HIV/AIDS coverage in India

An Indian association of women journalists will work with Internews Network to offer training, roundtables and trips aimed at improving coverage of HIV and AIDS.

Internews said it will collaborate for the next six months with the Indian Women’s Press Corps (IWPC) on a project to improve HIV/AIDS reporting among women journalists. The Kaiser Family Foundation’s Project for International Health Journalism is supporting the initiative, known as the Women’s Voices Project.

The aim is to encourage the journalists to cover HIV and AIDS in a fuller context, exploring their impact on society and why women tend to be more vulnerable. Internews said the project will "explore the many social, cultural and economic factors that increase women’s vulnerability to infection in India and the stigma faced by women living with HIV."

The IWPC, with more than 400 members mostly located in Delhi, will cooperate with Internews on organizing roundtable talks and – in cooperation with the Positive Women’s Network – training sessions. Internews Health Advisor Dr. Jaya Sreedhar will be the lead trainer on the project. Participants also will be able to do in-depth reporting projects on trips to Mumbai and rural Karnataka, Internews said.
