A female woman journalist from Uttarakhand was abducted and raped by two persons in Vindhyachal area of Mirzapur district, the police said Friday. The incident occurred when the victim had gone to Ahstabhuja hill Thursday evening, DIG Vindhyachal range R K Srivastava said, according to the Indian Express newspaper.
A case has been registered and one of the accused arrested. Efforts are on to establish the identity of the other. The journalist, who works for a Haridwar-based publication in Uttarakhand, had been assigned by her editor to do a report on Vindhyachal. She had reached the temple town on Wednesday.
The journalist had gone to perform prayers and gather information about Ashtbhuja temple near Vindhyachal temple in the evening. While she was returning at around 8.30 pm, two men sitting in a Scorpio in the area forcibly pulled her inside. They took the vehicle to a secluded place, where they took turns raping her. The women lodged a formal complaint with the Vindhyachal police station against unidentified persons following which a case of abduction-cum-gangrape was registered. The victim was also sent for medical examination. The report is awaited.
Circle Officer (City), Praveen Yadav, told the Indian Express: “At the time of the incident, she was alone. She, however, managed to give the registration number of the vehicle. We have traced the vehicle.” The driver of the vehicle, Ashwini Tiwari (32), a resident of Akhodhi area in Mirzapur, was questioned on Friday and later arrested.
