Yahoo opens a digital newstand

Yahoo on Thursday announced the debut of Livestand, a publishing platform that aims to deliver personalised content to mobile devices. The New York Times reported on Sunday, the platform, a digital newsstand, will offer a continuous stream of programming based on users’ interests.

Yahoo plans to push the platform across multiple formats, including tablets, smartphones, and Web browsers, according to the company’s press release. The platform, which will be available on the iPad and on Android tablets in the first half of this year, will also take into account a user’s location and the time of day.

Initially, Livestand will draw from Yahoo’s content library, a vast portfolio that includes Yahoo News and Flickr, but eventually, it will be available to third-party publishers. The project, initially named “Deadeye,” is a serious move by Yahoo to expand its mobile presence, according to two people close to the company, who were not authorized to speak about it.
