The Sunday Independent on Sunday said police have been harassing one of its journalists following an exposé on allegations of fraud, corruption and nepotism. Following the reports, the police were granted an interdict by the North Gauteng High Court to silence the paper, according to Eye Witness News.
The paper said the journalist who wrote the article was being followed by the police and had her phone bugged.
Editor Makhudu Sefara said, “Some of the things they did included that they phoned the relatives of the reporter…and started asking those people personal questions about her, her whereabouts.”
A journalist for the Star Newspaper was also allegedly approached by an intelligence officer to work as a spy for the police. The reporter informed Sefara about the matter. The paper now plans to ask the Inspector General of Intelligence to investigate claims of police intimidation.
