The registration of the case was preceeded by a clash between the family members and relatives of Sunny Khanna, the deceased, and the police outside the office of the Haryana director general of police. The family members, who had gathered there along with hundreds of supporters, were stopped from entering the premises.

It all started when Pankaj alias Sunny Khanna (27), a resident of Nariangarh, committed suicide by consuming celphos tablets. Sunny was a bureau chief in a magazine, Crime Tehkikat. In his suicide note, Sunny blamed MLA Ram Kishan, local trader Vijay Kumar alias Mekki and Ajit Aggarwal, besides the local police, for his death.

He wrote how he was physically and mentally tortured by the accused who registered false cases against him. The note said the accused physically assaulted him in front of Nariangarh SHO Suresh Sharma in the police station.

On March 21, the note said, Vijay and Ajit allegedly tried to kill him, after which he was admitted in the PGI for a day. “Even after repeated complaints against Vijay and Ajit, the police, acting under Ram Kishan’s influence, did not take any action. Also, the eyewitnesses of the attack were threatened to keep silent,” the suicide note read.

“He (Sunny) was emotionally strong, but these people made him suffer in every way. He did not take them seriously initially, but later he got completely demoralised,” said Preeti, Sunny’s younger sister.
