The Al-Jazeera television network has broadcast a film clip of kidnapped Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout and an Australian colleague, says a Canadian Press (CA) report). Lindhout, a freelance television and print reporter, and photographer Nigel Brennan, were abducted almost a month ago while on assignment in Somalia.
The Al-Jazeera video shows Lindhout wearing an Arab robe and surrounded by gunmen. She is shown speaking to the camera but the video's soundtrack was not aired. Al-Jazeera says the two appeared in the video to appeal to their governments to work for their release.
The Qatar-based TV network says their kidnappers are members of the so-called Mujahedeen of Somalia, which accuses the governments of Australia and Canada of "contributing to the destruction of Somalia."
The journalists were abducted August 23, along with a Somali journalist acting as their translator, and two Somali guards, while travelling to Elasha, some 20 kilometres southwest of the capital Mogadishu.
