Two senior photojournalists were injured when they were assaulted, allegedly by AIADMK activists, while covering a clash between two rival groups of the party during a function organised in connection with the inauguration of a AIADMK youth camp in Rameshwaram on Thursday.
Police told Press Trust of India that M Seenivasan, photo journalist of Tamil daily, Dinamalar, suffered injuries on the head and arms, while Daily Thanthi photographer Sethuramachandran suffered dislocation of wrist. Both had been admitted to the Ramanathapuram Government Hospital.
Details form the Hindu:
The incident took place when the photographers rushed to the venue after hearing reports of a clash between the rival groups. The loyalists of both the groups, armed with sticks and stones exchanged blows and pelted stones at each other, police said.
AIADMK district secretary Subramanian, however, said that though a police station was nearby, the police did not come to the venue despite repeated requests to intervene and disperse the clashing groups. The photojournalists were assaulted by AIADMK workers who presumed that they had taken pictures of the clash, police said.
The injured persons lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of police through the members of the Ramanathapuram Press club, who strongly condemned the incident.
