Website reporter held for impersonating Ambani in e-mail

Mumbai (PTI): A reporter of a website was on Saturday arrested for allegedly sending an e-mail impersonating as Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, a senior police official said.

Ashwin Pinto was arrested in the morning from his residence in the Cuffe Parade area of South Mumbai and produced before a local court which remanded him to judicial custody, a senior official in the Cyber Crime Cell told PTI.

Pinto, employed with a website that provides content on the Indian television industry, had allegedly sent the mail from a cyber cafe in South Mumbai to a senior journalist in which he identified himself as Ambani and made certain fictitious claims, police sources said.

The journalist then informed RIL officials who filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell.

The police traced the internet protocol address from which the e-mail was sent to a cyber cafe in Colaba area and from a router that was placed there they further traced it to the residence of Pinto.

A senior police official said there is unlikely that there was any malicious intent behind Pinto sending the email and possibly he had sent it for his own amusement.

"The hard disk from his residence has been seized and will be sent for examination. Pinto has been booked under the IPC for impersonation and under the Information Technology Act," the official added.
