Guardian website hits record levels

Guardian Unlimited posted an increase of nearly a million users over the past month to hit the highest-ever unique user figure for a UK net newspaper.

According to the figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronics, the web pages of the Guardian newspaper were accessed by 16.7 million people in September.

This far outstrips the reach of the real-world copy of the newspaper, which has an official circulation of just over 367,500 - showing the importance of having an online presence.

While the hard-copy of the Times may beat the Guardian with a circulation of over 654,000 readers, it comes second online with 12.5 million users.

However, this includes an increase of two million readers in September alone, showing that the Times Online is growing at twice the pace of Guardian Unlimited.

This bumped the Times Online into second place in the rankings of the most-visited newspaper websites in the UK - leapfrogging the Daily Mail group of websites, which only posted a modest increase of around 100,000 users over the month to 11.6 million.
