NEW DELHI: The government on Friday lifted the month-long ban on TV news channel Live India — earlier called Janmat . The I&B ministry had banned the channel on September 20 for telecasting an allegedly "fake" sting operation against a government school teacher Uma Khurana. This was the first instance of a news channel being banned.
In an official statement, the ministry said that the channel had pleaded that there was no deliberate attempt by it to defame anyone and that it had exercised all due diligence and care as per prevailing industry practice. The channel blamed the reporter claiming that he had "misled" them and unfortunately the sting operation telecast on August 30 took a different shape.
Live India had come under severe flak for its sting operation with both the ministry and the Delhi HC keen on stringent action.
