New Delhi, June. 23 (PTI): The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) today condemned the attack on the office of Malayalam daily ‘Mathrubhumi’ and asked the government to take urgent steps to bring the culprits to book.
Reacting with “shock and horror†to the attack on the Mathrubhumi office, INS President Hormusji N Cama said, “if criminal elements and miscreants are allowed to get away with such violence and threats and if coercive methods are used against newspapers, then the freedom of the press is under serious threat.â€
In a statement here, he said the INS feels that the government must view these developments with utmost seriousness and take urgent steps to bring the culprits to book.
“If newspapers and other media are unable to publish news and views without fear or favour, then the very foundation of the democratic polity will get damaged,†Cama said.
“We strongly urge the government to take immediate and effective steps to ensure that the miscreants and criminal elements do not feel that they can force the press into submission without fear of the long arm of the law,†he said.
