Journalist grilled over ‘creative reporting’ in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have recorded a statement from a reporter with an English daily for “excessive creative reporting” in the case of the landlord who fixed spy cameras in a house he rented out to female students.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm K. Kumaran said they would also interview a reporter with a Malay tabloid in connection with the case.

“All the information concerning the case is confidential and we did not release anything to the media.

“The information they reported is inaccurate – it is possible they cooked it up,” he said.

ACP Kumaran also said that the picture displayed on the front page of the Malay tabloid, which featured a woman taking a shower, was probably downloaded from the Internet.

“Although we did recover some clips from the suspect, we believe the picture in the paper was taken from a website because it is not the same as the pictures in our possession,” he said.

ACP Kumaran said that this was not the first time the two newspapers had pulled a stunt like this.

“They also quoted me as confirming their information, when I had in fact not even spoken to them.

“They said the suspect also installed spy cameras in his sister-in-law’s house but as far as we are concerned, there is no such thing,” he said.

“We have not received any report about it. Yet, I have been quoted as confirming that cameras were installed there.

“Inaccurate reporting like this will have serious consequences during the court hearing as it can jeopardise the prosecution’s case,” he said.

ACP Kumaran, who declined to elaborate on the status of the investigations, said the case had been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.

The case involves a 34-year-old interior designer who installed spy cameras in three bathrooms of a double-storey house in Taman Bullion Mewah, Jinjang, which he had rented out to 19 Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia female students.

The man was arrested at midnight on Saturday after the girls, who noticed the cameras near the fluorescent lamps in the bathroom, lodged a police report.
