Print-cum-Web-Journalists take a bite out of broadcast news

Local newspapers are making inroads into producing their own video newscasts and challenging local TV stations, reports Broadcasting & Cable.

Video newscasts are becoming a popular tactic employed by local newspapers looking to add a younger audience that is increasingly looking beyond print media for news sources. Newspapers who've made the digital transition include Miami Herald, Florida-based Naples Daily News and the Delaware-based News Journal.

Some of the videos are produced with a light, irreverent touch meant to appeal to just that younger audience. These newscasts are also often able to report news over the Internet well ahead of televised news broadcasts.

Newspapers take up a significant chunk - 36 percent - of local online ad spending, versus television's 7.7 percent. While TV stations might decry the lack of real talent among the newspapers' online news anchors, adding video to the mix could be another way to maintain or increase that share of spending.
