TV homes to jump 47 percent by 2050: Study

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Television on the wane? Not according to a forecast released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research, which projects that the nation's TV households will grow 47 percent to 163.7 million by 2050.

Nielsen pegged the number of television households in January at 111.4 million using Claritas demographic estimates. But armed with U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for the next several decades, Nielsen said there will be double-digit growth in TV households among blacks and triple-digit growth among Latino and Asian-American households.

It was the first time that the report tracked Asian-American TV households, which are set to jump 166 percent from 4.4 million today to 11.6 million by 2050.

Latino TV households also will increase dramatically, from 11.6 million today to 31 million in 2050, an increase of 167 percent.

Black TV households will increase 66 percent from 13.4 million now to 22.3 million in 2050.

The number of Americans who live in households with TVs also will grow, up 40 percent from 283.5 million today to 396.3 million in 2050. By 2050, that will include 56.5 million blacks (up from 35.6 million today), 94.4 million Latinos (up from 40.1 million today) and 34.8 million Asian-Americans (up from 13.6 million today).

The projections were published Wednesday in a study titled "Projected Estimates of TV Households and Persons 2008-2050."
