Charles Scripps, media baron, dies

Charles E. Scripps, who oversaw the family media company that bears his name as it expanded from newspapers into cable television, has died in Naples, Fla.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Scripps died of natural causes at his home at age 87.

Scripps was grandson of E.W. Scripps Co., founder Edward W. Scripps. He was chairman of the company's board from 1953 to 1994.

The Enquirer said his first newspaper job was at his grandfather's first newspaper, the Cleveland Press, where he was a police and courts reporter.

"To carry the family name is to carry the responsibility for quality and innovation in an ever-changing media environment," Scripps once said, the Enquirer reported.

Scripps holdings include the Cincinnati Post, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network.
