Unidentified gunmen made an unsuccessful attempt on the life of the editor and publisher of the Kangla Pao evening newspaper, Paonam Labango at around 9:10 pm tonight in front of the Kangla Pao office at Keisampat.
The gunmen, who were waiting for the editor to come out from his office fired a shot but fortunately the bullet missed him
After opening fire, the unidentified gunmen escaped under cover of darkness.
The Editors` Forum, Manipur, and the media fraternity of the state have strongly condemned the life attempt mounted on Paonam Labango.
This is not the first time that such attempts have been made on the life of journalists in the state.
Apart from frequent intimidation and threats, a number of journalists have been killed by unidentified gunmen, and life attempts have also been made.
An emergency meeting of editors held tonight at 11 pm has decided to suspend publication of newspapers for one day in reaction to the incident.
The media fraternity also appeal to all the voluntary organisations and meira paibis to come forward and condemn the attack and show their solidarity to the journalists who are rendering their services 24 hours a day in the interest of the public.
To protest the life attempt on Paonam Labango, the media fraternity will also stage a protest dharna tomorrow from 10 am. All journalists have been asked to attend the dharna, to be held in front of the Keisampat electricity house.
