NEW DELHI, NOV 17 (PTI): An expose of the Bihar flood scam which led to the jailing of an IAS officer and reporting into the missing tigers from the Indian wildlife sanctuaries have won the Indian Express the prestigious IPI India Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The India chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI) today announced the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs two lakh, a trophy and a citation.
A jury headed by Justice A S Anand, former Chief Justice of India, chose Indian Express for the award for excellence in investigative journalism. The newspaper had won the first such award in 2003 for its reporting on the Gujarat riots. NDTV has won the 2004 award, while none was chosen for the 2005 award.
The jury noted that the Indian Express had continuously investigated the two issues of high public importance, exposed the guilty and helped the victims by its reportage.
The award will be presented by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee at a function here on December eight.
The IPI, founded 56 years ago in New York by a group of editors from 15 countries, is a global organisation committed to promoting the freedom of the press.
The Vienna-based IPI works for promotion of free exchange of accurate and balanced news among nations and has been opposing any violation of press freedom and restrictions imposed on the free flow of information.
