Irish Times journalist refuses to reveal source of Bertie leak

The Irish Times journalist who wrote the article that has left the Taoiseach in serious political trouble has refused to reveal his sources to the Mahon Tribunal today.

The newspapers's public affairs correspondent, Colm Keena, has been summoned to appear before the tribunal today along with editor Geraldine Kennedy.

However, he is refusing to reveal the source of his story last week revealing that Bertie Ahern was under investigation in relation to payments he received from businessmen in 1993 and 1994.

The piece stated that businessman David McKenna was one of a number of people who had been contacted by the tribunal in relation to the payments.

However, Mr Keena refused to say today if he had seen the letter from the tribunal or if the source of his information was anonymous.

He said he would not answer questions which would assist the tribunal in investigating sources.

Ms Kennedy, meanwhile, told the tribunal that the Irish Times went through the normal verification process for two days before the story was published.

She said she was happy with the contents of the article and stood over everything detailed in it.

Ms Kennedy said she felt it was her duty as editor to publish the article and regretted any offence caused to the tribunal.

She also confirmed that she had destroyed copies of relevant documentation she had received from Mr Kenna and refused to go any further that he did about the source of the information.
