Basque editor Pablo Muñoz released on bail

The editor of the Diario de Noticias is to post ?4.000 bail within the next five days. He is accused of collaborating with an armed group helping extort money.

Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón Friday ordered the provisional release on bail of the editor of a Basque newspaper arrested early this week on suspicion of collaborating with an armed group after he allegedly acted as intermediary between ETA and business people from which the group wanted to extort money.

Pablo Muñoz, editor of the Navarre daily Diario de Noticias was ordered to appear weekly in the nearest court and barred to leave the country. He is accused of collaborating with an armed group helping extort money and is to post ?4.000 bail within the next five days, a court official reported.

The arrest was carried out in the Basque Country on orders from Judge Baltasar Garzon of the National Court. It raises to 18 the number of people either arrested or questioned for possibly helping ETA obtain money through what the group calls a "revolutionary tax".

The Interior Ministry said the new suspect is suspected of acting as intermediary between ETA and business people from which the group wanted to extort money.
