Radio journalist banned from work in Somalia

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) today condemns the order banning Journalist Abdikarin Omar Moallin of Radio Banadir in Jowhar district of Middle Shabelle region to do his journalism work.

The interim administration of Middle Shabelle region informed this morning the order banning him to work as stringer for Radio Banadir in the region. The reason behind the ban is a report he made on confrontations between the interim regional administration, which was formed by the Islamic courts after they took over the region recently, and businesspeople in the district, as Abdikarin Omar told NUSOJ.

"They arrested me yesterday, but released me after hours, and they called me today to tell me their order banning my job" Abdikarim Omar Moallim told the National Union of Somali Journalists.

"We strongly condemn this order as an act violating freedom of press" said Omar Faruk Osman, the NUSOJ Secretary General. "We appeal to the interim administration of middle shabelle region to immediately lift the ban on Abdikarin's journalistic work".

Abdikarin Omar was previously detained for a report he made for Radio Banadir. The Interim regional administration does not consider the Radio reports as reasonable and objective. Abdikarim is the second journalist whose journalism work is banned. Previously, Maryan Mohamud Qalanjo was banned to exercise her reporting work in Baidoa.
