New reports on shaping the newspaper's future

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has released six new strategy reports on some of the most important recent developments in the newspaper industry globally – -- new revenue models, outsourcing, digital classifieds, new editorial concepts advertising science and pricing strategies.

SHAPING THE FUTURE: WAN is a leading provider of industry research and analysis through its Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, which identifies, analyses and publicises all important breakthroughs and opportunities that can benefit newspapers all over the world. In addition to the annual strategy reports, SFN provides WAN members with a library of case studies and business ideas, and a wealth of other vital information for all those who need to follow press industry trends.

The reports from the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, which were released at the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum taking place in Moscow, Russia, focus on how publishers can benefit from the opportunities provided by these developments. WAN has published 30 SFN Strategy Reports in the past five years.

WAN conducts the SFN project with support from five international partners -- PubliGroupe, the Swiss-based international advertising and promotion group; MAN Roland, a leading company for newspaper production systems; UPM, one of the world’s leading printing paper producers; Telenor, the leading Norwegian telecommunications, IT and media group; and Samsung Electronics, a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, and digital convergence technology.

The New Revenue Strategies report examines how successful newspapers are adopting emerging revenue streams including diversification, online video and podcasting advertising and various forms of subscriptions to valuable content online.

Outsourcing which offers cases of newspapers that are focusing on core competencies and outsourcing advertising, printing, human resources, editorial, accounting or other roles. The report provides advice on how to determine whether to outsource or not, and includes a WAN global survey of outsourcing at newspaper companies.

Digital Classified Survey which includes the latest instalment of the WAN classified advertising survey. The report examines the speed of migration of classified advertisements from print to web in several key markets, and includes case studies of how some of the successful players are responding.

New Editorial Concepts focuses on how newspapers are providing readers with compelling content that bring them back for more. The report also examines newspaper companies around the globe that are developing new editorial products based on groundbreaking research.

Advertising Science describes how focusing on the building blocks of revenue development and attention to all elements of the advertising sales process leads to big rewards, both in terms of increases in revenue and reader loyalty.
