Photographer arrested for trying to take pictures of Hollywood celebrities

(MISA/IFEX) - On 19 May 2006, South African photographer John Liebenberg was arrested for trying to take photographs of the Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who are due to have their first baby soon.

Liebenberg was arrested in the yard of a police station in the coastal town of Walvis Bay, some 400 kilometres west of the capital, Windhoek. The police station adjoins a private clinic where Jolie was reportedly admitted to give birth to her first child.

As of 21 May, Liebenberg was still in police custody and was expected to appear before the Walvis Bay magistrate court on 22 May.

Bodyguards of the reclusive couple have been quite heavy-handed with local and foreign media personnel since Jolie and Pitt's arrival in the coastal village of Langstrand approximately seven weeks ago.

In April, Namibian authorities gave three South African journalists and one from France 48 hours to leave the country because they had traveled on tourist visas and had failed to apply for temporary work permits. All were reportedly interested in trying to take photographs of the couple.
