Coimbatore Press Club condemns attack on reporter

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Press Club today condemned the 'illegal arrest and assault' of the reporter of the Tamil magazine 'Kumudam' in Erode yesterday for 'unknown reasons'.

In a statement, press club General Secretary, G Jehova, said the reporter, Sakthi alias Gomathi Shankar, was assaulted and absued by police after taking him to Erode taluka police station, which amounted to human rights violation.

The club appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa to take stringent action, including suspension of the police inspector at the station, in this connection.

The club would decide its future course of action, if no action was taken against the police official, the statement said.
