The student newspaper at the University of Saskatchewan has accepted the resignation of its editor after the paper published a cartoon showing Jesus Christ involved in a sex act with a pig.
The Sheaf newspaper came under fire around the Saskatoon campus and on radio call-in shows after publishing its most recent edition. The issue contained a Capitalist Piglet cartoon that many people said was offensive.
Sheaf editor-in-chief Will Robbins submitted his resignation on Sunday and the paper's board of directors said Tuesday it had accepted it.
In a news release, the board said while the cartoon "is not consistent with the Sheaf's objectives," the decision to accept Robbins' resignation "was based primarily on his failure to carry out his duties diligently."
U of S president Peter MacKinnon also demanded an apology from the editorial staff.
The Sheaf is apologizing and said its retraction is expected to be in the next issue which will hit the stand later this week. The Sheaf expects to have a new editor in chief in place by September.
