Maratha fanatics ransack newspaper office in Pune

PUNE: At least seven persons claiming to be activists of Shambaji Brigade forcefully entered the office of 'Lokmat' newspaper on Monday evening and ransacked the place in protest against a poem in the Marathi daily's Sunday supplement on Shivaji Maharaj.

The activists threatened the employees for having published the poem by late GD Mudgulkar which referred Sant Ramdas Swam as Shivaji Maharaj's guru, Assistant Commissioner of Police DC Shepal said.

He said the activists entered the office and handed over a memorandum first against the publication of the poem in the Sunday supplement on February 19 and then put a few computers in the room upside down and also broke the flower pots.

A complaint has been registered against seven persons under various sections of the IPC for forceful entry into the newspaper's office with the intention of committing crime and also for engaging in rioting and mischief, Shepal said.

So far no one has been arrested in this connection, he added.

Meanwhile, on Sunday some 25 youths damaged computers and windowpanes, destroyed files and documents at the office of 'Loksatta' newspaper in Ahmednagar.

The youths were enraged because the newspaper had not carried any article on Shivaji Maharaj on the occasion of Shiv Jayanti.

Five persons were later arrested in connection with the incident, police said.
