Srinagar, Feb 11: Yusuf Jameel, veteran Kashmiri journalist has won the best journalist of the South Asian region award for his outstanding reporting from Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir during a visit across the Line of Control last year.
He was among a dozen journalists from Jammu and Kashmir who joined the return visit to Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir of the South Asian journalists and during the visit and on his return wrote a series of articles on his observations and the engagements across in Greater Kashmir’s Urdu weekly Kashmir Uzma and The Asian Age.
Jameel’s reports were judged as the best and won him the first best journalist award instituted by the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA).
Pakistani journalist Khalid Chaudhary has been judged as the best journalist from the neighbouring country for his write ups on the visit made to India including Jammu and Kashmir by him and other Pakistani and Kashmiri journalists from Muzaffarabad earlier. The award carries a citation and US $ 5, 000 for the winner.
Jameel and Chaudhary were declared as the winners at the 5th SAFMA conference underway in Hyderabad, India by M. Ziauddin, the resident editor (Islamabad) of Pakistani daily The Dawn and the head of the award committee, on Saturday.
