Pakistani journalists seek foreign help for kidnapped colleague

ISLAMABAD - Journalists in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Tuesday took to the streets to protest failure of authorities to recover a colleague abducted in the tribal North Waziristan region early this month.

They demanded international journalists’ bodies to take notice of Pakistani government’s "apathy" not just towards that incident but the overall "intimidating" environment for the media in the seven semi-autonomous tribal regions.

"Journalism has been paralyzed as we have been receiving threats and pressure from both sides (government agencies and militants)," Sailab Mehsud, president of Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ), told DPA.

"They (international journalists groups) should press the Pakistani government to take action in this matter," Mehsud said.
