KATHMNANDU, Sept. 23: About 2,881 newspapers and journals have been registered in the country during the fiscal year 061-062. Out of this, only 557 newspapers are published. And only 322 of them are said to be regular, it is stated in the 30th annual report of the Nepal Press Council.
The Council has been issuing the annual report every year. Among the newspapers, those in A’ category are estimated to be around 11, that of weeklies are estimated at 15, one fortnightly and 9 monthly journals.
Likewise, there are 17 dailies in the category B’, 41 weeklies and 15 monthlies. In category C’, there are 13 dailies, 99 weeklies, 3 bi-weeklies, 7 fortnightly publications and 15 monthlies. In the category D’, there are 21 dailies, 107 weeklies, 14 fortnightly and 6 monthlies.
Among those registered newspapers, 1,840 are published in Nepali languages, 76 in English, 16 in Nepal Bhasa, 5 Hindi, 8 Tharu, 2 Bhojpuri, 3 Maithali and 231 newspaper use other mixed languages, it is stated in the report.
In the report for the fiscal year 2061-62, only 54 literary papers are regular while 19 have been registered as literature collection and 20 only page literary newspapers.
Meanwhile, the Council have also mentioned that 56 dailies, 272 weeklies and 58 new weeklies and 2 fortnightly have been recorded on the CD. According to the report, seven journalists have been killed by the Maoists.
They are Navaraj Sharma, Ambika Timilsinha. Gyanendra Khadka, Nagendra Pokharel, Dhan Bahadur Rokka Magar, Dekendra Raj Thapa and Khagendra Shrestha.
The constructive of Nepalese media in ending the cycle of violence and terrorism to restore peace in the country has also been emphasised in the report. It also called on the Nepalese journalists to remain committed to accountable, mature journalism.
