Punjab govt orders probe into Express journalist arrest

Chandigarh, August 29: Hours ahead of his production in a local court, Punjab government on Monday ordered an inquiry into the arrest of a correspondent of The Indian Express by police allegedly in connection with a rape case.

"An inquiry by Home Secretary A.K. Dubey has been ordered into the case and the prosecution will not oppose the bail plea of the correspondent in the court," Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said. Singh said that he had summoned the chief secretary, state police chief and advocate general to discuss further line of action in this case.

Taking congnizance of media reports, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had also summoned Punjab police chief and advocate general in the case. "Action will be taken against those police officials found guilty in the whole episode," the Chief Minister said.

"The CM has assured action against police officials who picked up (journalist) Gautaum Dheer from his Panchkula residence in Haryana on Sunday night," said Vipin Pubby, resident editor of The Indian Express Chandigarh edition.
