Express journalist released on bail in Punjab

Chandigarh, August 29: Buckling under mounting pressure, Punjab police on Monday released The Indian Express correspondent Gautam Dheer on bail, a day after he was arrested from his residence in connection with a case.

The scribe was released on bail on furnishing a personal and surety bond of Rs 10,000 each, Ropar police chief S.P. Singh said. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had ordered a high-level probe into his arrest.

Asserting that it was for freedom of the press, the Congress on Monday termed as most regrettable the arrest of a correspondent of The Indian Express by Punjab police in connection with a case.

"We are for freedom of the press. Journalists have every right to express and report and if anybody undermines that, then it is for government to take action," party spokesman Anand Sharma said.
