Sandipan Deb resigns; will launch magazine division of Express Group

In an interesting turn of events, Sandipan Deb, Managing Editor of Outlook, and second in command to Editor-in-Chief Vinod Mehta, has put in his papers, putting an end to a decade-long stint with the publishing house. He will be joining the Indian Express Group in September to start a magazine division there. And he is not alone. He is taking with him three senior hands from Outlook.

Rajesh Jha, Managing Editor of ‘Outlook Money’, Features Editor Soma Wadhwa and Prashant Panjiar, former Photo Editor of Outlook, will initially comprise the team at the Express group headed by Deb.

Confirming the development to exchange4media, Deb said, "Over the last ten years, we have managed to create one of the biggest brands in print media. It has been a really exciting and challenging task. And now, I will be setting up the magazine division for the Express Group from scratch, which is an equally exciting opportunity."

Though Deb refrained from commenting on the nature of the magazines, he said that the Express Group is looking at all sorts of publications and may consider books as well.

Deb has been with Outlook since its inception in 1995. The news magazine has a circulation of over three lakh today. Deb also played a key role in launching ‘Outlook Money’ in 1998 – then known as ‘Intelligent Investor’ - India's first personal finance magazine offering sound strategies for the lay investor. The magazine today boasts of a circulation upwards of 1,20,000.

Deb, an ex-IIT and ex-IIM, was Executive Editor of A&M magazine in the early 90s, before joining Outlook. He has also written a book, ‘The IITian’.
