The competition is presented through a partnership between the Online News Association (ONA) and the USC Annenberg School for Communication. Winners will be announced at the Online Journalism Awards Banquet during the sixth national conference of the Online News Association, which will be held October 28-29 in New York.

The contest is open to all English-language Web sites around the world. The judges will review entries in the following categories: general excellence in online journalism; breaking news; specialty journalism; enterprise journalism; service journalism; online commentary; outstanding use of multiple media; student journalism; and student Web site. The competition is for work published between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.

In response to the growth and development of online news since the award’s inception in 2000, the Online News Association this year adopted several changes in the competition, including the addition of new size divisions for General Excellence in Online Journalism and Online Commentary. Contest rules, entry forms and information are available at www.onlinenewsassociation.org (or at www.journalists.org).

The USC Annenberg School is home to two other major journalism awards. The Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting recognizes the year’s best investigative reporting in print journalism with a $35,000 prize, the highest in journalism. The USC Annenberg Walter Cronkite Awards for Outstanding Television Political Journalism are presented biannually to television stations, reporters, and networks for political reporting in election years.

Located in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California, the USC Annenberg School for Communication is among the nation's leading institutions devoted to the study of journalism and communication, and their impact on politics, culture and society. With an enrollment of more than 1,700 graduate and undergraduate students, USC Annenberg offers B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in journalism, communication, and public relations.

The Online News Association is an association composed largely of professional online journalists. The Association has several hundred professional members, that is, members whose principal livelihood involves gathering or producing news for digital presentation. The membership includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, photographers and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems, as well as academic members and others interested in the development of online journalism.
