Print, photo fellowships focus on AIDS, TB epidemics

Print reporters and photojournalists in nine countries where HIV, AIDS and tuberculosis are most severe can apply for fellowships aimed at raising public awareness of these problems.

The Panos Global AIDS Program and the Stop TB Partnership are sponsoring the fellowships, which will run from June to October 2005. May 2 is the application deadline.

The organizers say the fellowships will help journalists from these high-burden countries better understand the connections among TB, HIV and AIDS, poverty, urbanization, and other socioeconomic issues. Eligibility is open to journalists in five Asian countries, three African, plus one in the Caribbean: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia and Haiti.

There will be three print fellows from India and two from each other eligible country. Each of these fellows are to write three articles of at least 1,000 words, for which they will receive a US$400 grant plus travel and reporting expenses.

There also will be a total of four photojournalism fellows chosen from all countries. The photo fellows will receive US$1,000 plus expenses for producing one photographic essay.
