Ministry revokes channel’s licence

After serving India TV with a showcause notice for the sting operation on MPs, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has revoked the licence of CineWorld, an encrypted channel based in Mumbai.

The channel has been prohibited from transmitting/re-transmitting programmes for 30 days after it aired some ‘‘obscene’’ movies.

The Ministry, which is in the process of setting up a quasi-legal regulatory authority to monitor and receive complaints on television channels, has warned CineWorld that if it continued to engage in similar activities, its licence would be terminated. But till the authority is in place, the Ministry is getting the channels monitored at the Central Monitoring Service.

‘‘The Government is serious on this issue and will keep a close watch on channels engaging in such activities,’’ sources in the Ministry said.
