Asian broadcasters eligible for course in the Netherlands

Asian broadcasters are invited to apply for fellowships to attend a training course in the Netherlands on reporting socially divisive issues.

The course will take place at the Radio Netherlands Training Center (RNTC) in Hilversum from January 31 to April 22, 2005. Full scholarships are available to mid-career journalists Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The course will examine ways to strengthen broadcast journalists' ability to research, investigate and report responsibly on issues that divide individuals and groups. Trainers will teach techniques to meet this challenge, and other broadcast journalism skills such as interpretation, speed and accuracy under pressure, communication and teamwork.

The program is geared towards journalists working in the developing countries. Participants will work with analog and digital broadcast technology and will develop material for a Web site related to the course.

Applicants should be mid-career broadcast journalists with a secondary or professional education and media experience. Applicants must also have a good command of both written and spoken English.

Before applying for a fellowship, candidates must apply directly to the RNTC to attend the course. Course applications are due August 1. Should they be accepted, candidates will receive a conditional letter of acceptance, after which they can apply for the fellowship.

Fellowship applications must be received in the Netherlands by November 1, but fellowship officers at Dutch embassies or consular posts in the applicant’s country may need up to a month in advance to process the application.

Course information and application forms are at http://www.rnw.nl/rntc/ICBJ_2005.html.
